first lesson in the garden with Chef Ian

This is our school garden on May 19. Chef Ian came to help us weed horsetail behind the dumpster and then show us how to plant potatoes into the new patch. We also planted some mature herbs into the left garden bed.

this is public enemy number one: horsetail. Did you know, that you have to dig the plant up and remove the entire root system to get rid of it?

Below is Alwin's log of our day in the garden:

We weeded horsetails and we found out that the plant can make medicine. We planted potatoes. There were 4 varieties: white, yellow, purple and red. We cut them in half and planted the by digging a hole 8” deep and covering them with the soil.

We also tasted many of the herbs in the garden and planted a few new ones. After the hard work the cafeteria made us cold apple juice. It was a nice surprise. Thank Cafeteria and a BIG Thank U to Chef Ian for a great start gardening

first lesson with Chef Ian

The Pre-Employment English 11/12 class was lucky enough to have Chef Ian Lai come to work with us 4 times this school year. On March 14, we had our first lesson in the classroom and learned how to make a multi-grain mini loaf.

We made multi grain bread. Everyone mixed ingredients rolled it into a ball, proofed it and then had it baked in the cafeteria. It was an easy, fun project and a great success.

try it for yourself! Here is the recipe:

-1 cup yeast water

-1 cup flour

- pinch of oats (grain)

- pinch of salt
